    re Gillards speech

"In a confident oratorical effort, Ms Gillard recalled her father's determination to find work when he emigrated with his family to Australia.

"When we first came to this country times were tough," the Welsh-born prime minister said.

"Dad had to knock on many doors to get a job.".
    ..
ahhhh - The gillards came to australia in 1966, when Julia would have been 4 or 5 years old - so my guess, is that she does not recall anything. Anyway, the 1966 australian unemployment rate was 2%, which is hardly "times were tough" The unemployment rate remained at about 2% till about 1973

In 1973, there was the first oil shock, which lead to a stockmarket collapse, and the end of a mining boom in australia - and rising levels of unemployment.

Simply outright spin by Gillard - ie changing history - .. changing history from boom economy to "times were tough"
