Men a few generations back in my family used to ride pushbikes to work across town - and back - to shift work. For years. One had 10 kids - and lived in rentals. Their kids started their own small businesses with huge struggle - and ended up doing well, with courage and initiative, but lots of suffering along the way.
One of my forbears and his wife survived the great Depression in the main by eating pumpkin grown by their in-laws, having lost their house - with a first baby expected.
THAT is doing it hard!

BTW - Stephen Smith has met with the President of Nauru - and asked him to sign the UN convention! Will this be the ultimate in hypocrisy! Another last minute rabbit out of the hat. And now Smith claiming his government has been "encouraging" Nauru to sign. "Yes, we will win by lying" should be the Labor slogan!
