Gillard must have mistaken the timing for the children overboard affair, in which the government promulgated the lie that asylum seekers had thrown their children overboard in October 2001 (prior to the November election). The subsequent senate inquiry found that the government knew prior to the election that this was false, but went to the election maintaining the dishonest narrative.
