"spending cuts may be needed to return the budget to surplus on time, the prime minister has warned."

I've just spent the last few hours working it out - taking into account the population of Australia, the projected budget deficit both before and after the floods, the increase in population and welfare recipients since 2007 ---it comes down to about $900 per head of working population that has to be returned to the federal Govt. to put us on a fiscally responsible footing - sort of where we were prior to 2007.
