I well recall the clamour in 1996 to polish up the baseball bats to take to Keating; ditto in 2012 in Queensland to give the Bligh team a whack. I even recall the 1975 groundswell to get rid of Whitlam.

I sense the same again, but it is far more intense this time around. Gillard is leading her Party to a result that will punish not only her, but a once great Party. For that alone, I'm astonished that the Labor supporters on this forum aren't appalled about what she's doing, rather than cheering her along to the edge of the cliff.

It's interesting that it's mainly conservative voters and commentators who see the lemming-like rush to the cliff. Some on the other side do as well - I'm sure - Richo has expressed some concerns that way, as has Gary Johns, Michael Costa and a few others. The lack of insight by the cheer squad is quite troubling - or it will be [for them].

Much as I want Labor to be crushed, as it deserves it, I don't want to see our 2 Party system trashed. The strength of it are two strong parties, both relatively centrist in policy. That has served us well. Gillard has wrenched the Party far to the left and alienated much of her base vote. They won't come back easily.
