Prime Minister Julia Gillard says a media report alleging $5000 was deposited into her account by former AWU employee is unsubstantiated and is a smear.

Fair enough. The labor luvvies want the smoking gun. But is there a smoking gun which condemns the Catholic Church?

If there was, charges would [should] have been laid at the feet of the bishops by now but it is thought that there is evidence that endemic crime has occurred and an inquiry is warranted.

Wouldn't a little consistency be nice? Isn't there evidence that a crime has occurred in the AWU/HSU too and that it is endemic in the union movement?

Anyway, if charges were laid re the slush fund, any magistrate would have no option but to refer the matter to a higher court. A prima facie case exists. ergo A detailed reply should be forthcoming. It is Julia's option to answer in parliament or in court. Answering via the media doesn't cut it.
