The union took over a scheme set up by the industry called BIGS ( building industry group scheme) which ended up by being managed by the CFMEU in it's entirety. They were responsible for recruiting, placement & training. They ran it like the CMFEU and recruited sons of unionists etc who wouldn't turn up to work, builders refused to use them because they were so un reliable and proceeded to setup their own apprentice scheme in the MBAV.
However the cruncher was when it was found the union wasn't paying them the correct rates or hadn't payed super etc for most of them. One main guy of the CFMEU who was administering the BIGS scheme nicked off with over 200 K. Outcome was all the main builders had to pickup the apprentices and pay back pay for them.
Long and short it the CFMEU cannot help themselves.
