Cyclone Yasi will cause more slashing of the Federal budget on top of those from the floods, theres also going to be a Flood Levy - yet apparently theres one sacred cow the govt cannot touch.

When Federal Parliament resumes this year its top Order of business is - not national Storm damage, not the shaky state of the Economy, not any one of many other pressing matters; even not one of Julias promises. Instead its intent on pushing through those NBN bills (National broadband Network), making sure that this beast will endure. Why is NBN so sacred?

Recently anyone who questioned the merits of Wireless Broadband against that of NBN (for the average Australian) was attacked by massed propaganda from Conrod or his NBN team.
Yet in his Union speech last week no less a person than President Obama made heretical statements advocating wireless broadband for 98% of Americans.
Then today we have Cisco saying Australian mobile data use (vid/internet) via Smartphones will grow 32-fold from by 2015; wireless again.

Major connections between centres obviously do and will - use fibre optics to transfer vast quantities of data, yet to insist fibre must be laid in just about every street as the NBN does is questionable.

So at a time of national problems as we are, why cannot this sacred cow be used to help out?
