Case in point a party in the 80s ran a campaign in the ACT on the platform of abolishing those seats as it was a total waste of public monies. On winning they reneged and continued to govern as the lurks and perks were too attractive. Australia has lost its middle ground, hence the rise of these ultra right wing parties in opposition to the increasing left that is a world wide phenomenon but now swinging back with a vengeance to the right but the trouble is there has been a lot of irreparable damage done.
