Fair point 123, but I think you and Delingpole are talking about two different things (note he refers directly to the Earth Hour sponsors & the pro carbon tax WWF). Note also the writer's style is deliberately provocative & rhetorical, with a view also to entertainment [James Delingpole is a writer, journalist and broadcaster who is right about everything. He is the author of numerous fantastically entertaining books] - but in answer to FreeWill's post:

The existing board, in the interests of existing shareholders, believes that the editorial charter drives shareholder value.

and how has that worked out so far?

Fairfax's newspaper division is worthless, according to analyst

THE Fairfax Media unit that runs the company's flagship newspapers is now worthless, according to a leading analyst.

And the radical cost-cutting program unveiled this week may not be enough to revive the publishing and broadcasting company, industry experts say.

Deutsche Bank media analyst Andrew Anagnostellis has told investors that Metro Publishing - the Fairfax unit that publishes The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald - has "nil value".

    ...

Mr Anagnostellis said: "We have assigned a NIL value to Metro Publishing to reflect the deteriorating earnings profile".

The growth in revenue from online operations would be insufficient to make up for the decline in print revenue, he said.

Digital revenue would need to grow 33 per cent next financial year, compared with a likely growth rate of 10 per cent, "to offset an estimated $87 million decline in print revenues".
