You have a bad dose of the Dutch disease (Middle Class Syndrome0 if you dont mind me saying so. The idea of the SEZ is that it will negate our non-competitive economic variables while: -maintaining normal global safety & environmental standards ( these would be the most advanced /state of the art plants) -the idea of a SEZ is not to employ uncompetitive local labour or any other uncompetitive inputs (solely to add value to our raw exports) -we have a competitive advantage via our local iron ore. met coals & lime. (For example, China has to ship our iron ore, met coals, scrap steel LNG and thermal coals to China, make the steel in China and then ship the steel globally to customers including Australia & NZ. while we have the materials here, make the steel here and directly ship the steel to the customers -one less shipping leg.
For practical purposes you have to regard the SEZ as not being in Australia, just solely a means of of adding Aussie value to our currently exported raw materials and the proceeds shared equitably with all Aussies. i know for some with a working class bias, this may be hard to understand
Just imagine the SEZ like a Mega cruise ship anchored in the bay with a mega casino on board exclusively for foreign punters and crewed as all cruise ships are (3rd world crew) and all the earnings going to Australia (comparable to export earnings ) & the profits being deposited in a Future Fund for all Aussies (unlike the Pollies current Future Fund) And so it would be with SEZ except a different product.
