Saw the program on SBS, They glossed over many aspects, which is understandable, given the scope of what they are trying to achieve with this 3 part series. As a teenager & young man i lived in Kal during those times, working on the mines & exploration teams. 1972 was the year of the Posieden crash not 1970. That era transformed Kalgoorlie from a very backward, isolated, inward looking, dying township with failing goldmines to a place where people from all over the world came to once again possibly make their fortunes. Were there many scammers, yes, but the majority of people were there for the adventure. For me as a young man it opened my eyes to the outside world and what could be possible. One regret, spent to much time there and never learnt to surf. Small story while i am on this thread. True story. A guy called into the Hay St brothels, during the start of the original gold boom of the Eighties. He said to the madam that he was a driller & just got into town but had not yet been paid, but where he was working there were nuggets scattered on the ground, which he promptly pulled out from his pocket. They agreed on the amount of nuggets for a weeks stay and of course he was spoilt rotten by the girls. When he finally left to go back to work, the madam took the gold to the bank to be cashed in. She was most upset when told the gold was melted down $1 & $2 coins. Police searched for him to be arrested for fraud but he was never seen again. Lucky bastard.
