Looks to me as if what might have helped here is a pre-appointment enquiry as to whether the candidate for high office was in an abusive and/or manipulative relationship such as might be prejudicial in her/him carrying out the duties of the office without unacceptable interference. How many women in particular (but occasionally men too cf Bill Clinton) are in manipulative & controlling and/or abusive relationships of this nature?
