Quarterlies are, by their nature, bound to disappoint as they are a required report based on events and circumstances up to a date 1mth in arrears of publication.
If anything of real significance has occurred in the intervening month then we would know about it, and the quarterly is (even more than usually) redundant.

Can anyone tell me, if, say, something momentous had happened (eg takeover offer of $1 from David Jones) in the weeks between end of reporting period and the obligatory release of the quarterly, would it (can it?) be mentioned if there was no evidence of the event prior to the end of the relevant reporting period?

Much more interesting, unpredictable and informative are the 'shareholder updates', which thankfully we are getting more often these days than in the dark past. These cannot be anticipated (we all know the quarterly comes out at the very last moment at the end of the month after the reporting period) and so disappointment is inherently less as we have less time to build up often unreasonable expectations of it being a "company maker".

C'mon APG - give us an "update"!
