I remember canning a project that was going nowhere while consuming scare resources. I had to do this without belittleing those working on the project. This wasn't difficult because these people had to set a new direction which invloved technology that was new to them which most people in the area loved.
I foresaw much greater difficulties with my bosses. They accepted my recommendations without much comment. I was expecting to be "hauled over the coals" at the annual staff appraisal session; instead I was congratulated for having the guts to make a tough decision.
My comment was: I'm delighted to see that I have caught up to you rather than the other way round.
I subsequenly attended many company education courses that emphasised the "move and adjust as you go" with goals set as something to aim at which, of course, are aso adjusted as you go and gain futher knowledge. You will always know more today than you did yesterday.
At all times keep in mind that you are dealing with people.
