Global roaming with Kogan mobile on the cheap.
I am currently travelling in China and thought I'd share my experiences on how I'm saving on mobile costs.
I'm using an iPhone 6+ with a A$ 12 per month Kogan mobile (free calls and 7Gb/mth Australia only) package and have bought a cheap Chinese sim (local calls and limited data) for my old iPhone 5.
Most hotels have free WiFi so I use this for both phones (internet, emails, etc) most of the time.
If I am out of free WiFi range then I use the old iPhone 5 (local sim) as a hotspot to get access. Is fast with good coverage.
To phone internationally I use:
- FaceTime audio (free and perfectly clear) if my contact also has an iPhone, or
- Skype (A$ 0.08/min) if my contact has Android or other (cheap and a bit less clear).
- Skype appears to have a free call facility, but I haven't bothered to try it yet as I already have Skype credit.
WhatsApp and Gmail are blocked here 99% of the time (they must reboot their blocking servers every now and then, because occasionally everything arrives). I switch to using my iCloud email when I'm in China.
Microsoft OneDrive cloud access to my business account (subscription) and personal account (free) works well via my mobile, however for some reason access to the personal account appears blocked when I use my laptop.
