As I understand it, ucg per se doesnt capture and store CO2.

However, the reticulation system that extracts the syngas and the treatment plant that cleans/prepares the syngas for its commercial application is a very efficient means by which to divert off the CO2 ... its about as simple as a valve I believe ... so ucg is good at the capture of ccs.

The only way then to store the captured CO2 that I am aware of is deep geosequestration where the CO2 is injected down dedicated wells to attach itself to the pores within a stable rock mass ... in the case of ucg that would be well below the ucg chamber imo ... deep coal is often particularly suitable. But no company is yet doing geosequestration in an affordable commercial scale on a commercial project that I am aware of.

For now, the "greener" tag given to ucg is limited to a 25-30% or so lower CO2 emmissions per unit of energy compared to most modern coal fired power stations.
