Climate change is an interesting subject and the more you begin to understand about it the more there appears to be unknown as you move out into space chasing the various forces and cycles that the earth, and the sun, are subject to. Anyone who claims to have the problem and the solution all sussed out is simply deluded.
One of the aspects that interests me are the orbital cycles. It appears that at this point in time the eccentricity of the earths orbit around the sun is about 0.017 and ever decreasing, moving towards an eccentricity of zero. What this means that the earth during the northern hemisphere summer at present is about 5 millon km closer to the sun than during the southern hemisphere summer. In the past this difference has been as much as 20 million km, an eccentricity of 0.07. Whilst there are other orbital cycles that can compound or reduce the effects of this eccentricity it appears to me that this could be the reason the difference in the amount of ice and the rate of melting at each of the polar caps. Anyone have any thoughts about this?
