So wrong, scientists are generally a smart bunch who could be earning so much more money in so many other fields. They pursue science because they they are incredibly curious, they want to venture past the frontier and progress humanity and you can only do this with the truth, which is why scientists would rise up in anger is they smelt conspiracy amongst their own.

You can not compare a scientist to a businessman. Most scientists, if they earned a mild passive income would quit their jobs completely and would pursue their curiosities wherever they lie. While im not sure you can, try to imagine a world where governments invested in scientists, just enough to keep them going, imagine how different the current world would be, how many new technologies we would have, how many cures we would have. Do you understand now why scientists would not stand to see science misrepresented in any single field? Scientists are not the boring sterile robots pictured in labcoats, their minds are alive and bubbling with ideas and curiosities, you would be hard pressed finding more interesting people and they are not at all interested "buttering their bread" wink wink, touch nose.
