A group of 59 scientists are warning of the dire consequences of the drying out of the Northern Peatlands and aboreal forests. The increased threat of fierce fires is the big concern. These areas are massive and store huge amounts of carbon on a global scale. Scientists are saying the drying out in the Northern Peatlands and the aboreal forests is so extreme that the likelihood of massive fires is very real. The Northern Peatlands cover 4 million sq km in Canada and Russia. These Peatlands sequester carbon from the atmosphere. If they burn the release of carbon into the atmosphere will make the recent Australian bushfires look like a burn off by comparison.
