For a start - you've lost all credibility when you say - "I understand the science"
No one understands the science - otherwise it would not be such a debated "science"
Rule no 1 in life - when you are being conned - most of the time you don't know you are being conned - as in your case.
As for "it scares you" - ROFL - I've been married 40 years - nothing scares me!
