IMHO ---In the short term Trump wants smooth sailing until the election after that it will be hands off and China has always been the weaker of the two
The US can get supply in lots of other places and the US manufacturing base has always been able to gear up quickly to cover any shortfall in available goods
China needs the US more than the other way round as China is still developing and has many competitors including India which could replace China as a cheap manufacturing country
All of this makes Australia's position far more delicate due to our reliance on China for about 30% of our trade
We must be more independent of everyone or forever be dragged into something we don't want a part of.
