Not a tax accountant, but assuming you have to sell the shares some brokers can buy the shares from you for 0.001 or some low figure which you basically reimburse. You are then allowed to write that off and the broker or whoever buys them holds random shares which they bought for nothing.
I'd happily buy shares from people who are wanting to write off the investment
