It's our Christmas present that GNC was able to announce this morning that yesterday, more than 300000 tonnes of grain was received at its sites, the best day so far for the 2022 winter crop.
Note also how the Queensland crop has done extremely well, small as it is in comparison to the southern states. An unexpected bonus so take a bow, growers in areas like Thallon in southwest Queensland.
More than 1.2 million tonnes have flowed in during the past week:Grain receivals (tonnes) at GrainCorp up-country sites as at 19 December 2022
Since 12 December 2022 Total Queensland 26,670 2,109,600 New South Wales 747,190 3,694,980 Victoria 484,260 1,871,540 Total grain receivals 1,258,120 7,676,120
GNC is 26 per cent behind the more or less equivalent day a year ago, whereas last week it was only 23 per cent behind.
In January 2023, there'll be some gradual catch up as the harvest is a lot later this year in NSW and Victoria. However I stand by the prediction this year will not be a record. It won't match 2021 winter crop receivals but will still be good to very good.Grain receivals (tonnes) at GrainCorp up-country sites as at 20 December 2021
Since last report Total Queensland 35,020 1,724,250[1] New South Wales 1,377,670 5,968,900 Victoria 609,630 2,665,140 Total grain receivals 2,022,320 10,358,290
This is GNC's standout comment today:
"...Clear and drier weather conditions saw strong harvest activity continue throughout NSW and Victoria, particularly in the Junee, Temora and Wyalong regions in southern NSW, and in the Wimmera, Mallee, Swan Hill and northeast regions of Victoria..."
At a quick look at the BOM site, in a band from Lake Cargelligo down to the NSW Riverina and then south to Horsham and Nhill in Victoria, five out of the next seven days are claimed to be fine and sunny, so even city boys like me know that is ideal for harvesting.
The next harvest update won't be until 3 January 2023 so it'd be great if a further two million tonnes (at a minimum) were received by GNC sites by then.
Portsmouth is one of our contributors with excellent sector knowledge. Does he share my back-of-the-envelope view that GNC's shipping stem will be busy for at least the next 18 months if not longer?
It's our Christmas present that GNC was able to announce this...
