At level crossings, last I read via the Australian Rail Track Corporation website, trains must stop and have an authorised person stand on the road, and then, only then, can the train proceed.
Not dissimilar to the early days of rail with the English Stockton to Darlington line from 1825.
At least now we don't have adjacent landholders protesting in rural areas about train routes. (Oh wait, we do in Queensland with Inland Rail).
