I don't think you're assessing the debt correctly.
GNC buys produce from farmers up-front and then sells it, so debt fluctuates through the year - its effectively related to inventory. Paradoxically, in better growing seasons, GNC's peak debt is higher, since there is more produce to buy.
GNC reports "core debt / cash" which normalises the debt based on the time of year. At the end of FY21 (September 30 for GNC), core debt was $1m (down from $37m at end-FY20). At the end of FY22, core debt had become a core cash balance of $177m, and this had increased further to $200m at end H1-FY23.
As further evidence, GNC pays strong dividends and does not borrow to pay these dividends.
Finally, FWIW, Macquarie Equities is forecasting npat of $1.11 per share in FY23 and a dividend of 47c (fully franked).
