RUSSIA BACKS DOWN AS GRAIN EXPORTS RESUME
ISTANBUL: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the crucial traffic of ships carrying Ukrainian grain products had resumed late on Wednesday night (AEDT), following a phone call between the Turkish and Russian defence ministers. Mr Erdogan, who played a key role in brokering the original grain deal between Russia and Ukraine to ease the global food shortage, said Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu had called Hulusi Akar, his Turkish counterpart, telling him “the grain shipments will continue”. Later, the defence ministry in Moscow confirmed it had received what it considered were adequate guarantees from Kyiv and was therefore “resuming the implementation of the (grain) agreement”.
