In addition to Carlisles informative reply, there are some very sophisticated computer modelling software packages that take all the available data, including porosity and permeability, number of producing zones,downhole pressure, etc etc, that do give reasonably reliable forecasts.
Latent/TSV/halliburton/Ely now have data from three wells to enable them to make a good estimate.
