    you say,

    God is merciful, hes tolerated me long enough but it seems to me a grave error to assume he loves us, only if we give up our sinful ways will we have a defence against evil.

    i say,

    i'm assuming that you have never been a parent,

    because if you had, or are, you would understand the concept of "unconditional" love.

    you would love your child even if they did something wrong.

    That's the same with our "heavenly Father"

    He loves us unconditionally.

    That doesn't mean that he doesn't set rules for us,

    he sets the rules because he loves us and wants to bless and protect us, that's what his rules are for, same as the rules you set for your own children, you set them because you love and want to protect your own children.

    There are consequences for breaking God's rules, but eternal damnation is NOT one of them.

    Blessings and cursings are for this life only,

    afterwards, well, that's up to God.
