I've read the original post and there are no open questions in it, so your proposal that it's a 'strawman question' fails before it's gotten started.
As for the 'real issues' I would have thought the real issues were fairly clear. The God of the OT is a Mass-Murdering, Genocidal, Infanticidal, Homophobic bully that Christians keep asking me to welcome into my heart.
There's not a lot of ambiguity or 'context' here. In the highly unlikely event that all powerful cosmic creator actually exists, he, she or it would be a damn sight more admirable than the arse-wipe I got told about in Sunday School.
