Of course it is open to question how much of the "birth of Islam" story itself is literal and as happened.
I think in general people underestimate how much early writings are woven and embellished as a story intended to fulfill a particular purpose.
Especially once the direct influence of the founder and his/her immediate pupils has passed.
Not to mention how something intended only for a particular narrow audience or pupil at the time corresponding to their particular requirements somehow "escapes" and becomes ironclad law for all.
Analogous to how specific customs developed for tribal people in hot climates becomes "God's Law".
