It would only help for a while because the root problem is not religion, the problem is ego (the mind virus).
Buddha, Jesus & co. were not founders of religions - they were awakened beings. They attempted to help others see the truth, but very few understood. Most of Jesus' disciples had no idea what he was talking about, but they did know there was something very different about him (same is is true for other gurus and sages). Followers used their minds to try to understand, and so of course everything became perverted. The whole idea was to transcend the mind!
It's similar to what happens on this forum. Asking 'where's the hard proof?' means you don't understand what spirituality is about. No offence meant, but that's not how it works. Religious texts are ok, but at first they are difficult to grok. Nothing wrong with them.
