If you’re a classic car buff, Cuba is just about the greatest place on the planet. It’s like one big car show, where autos from the 1940s and 1950s motor along the streets and highways. There are Chevrolets, Fords, Pontiacs, Buicks, Dodges, Plymouths, and Studebakers. The cars run the gamut from mint condition to downright dilapidated. Well-preserved cars have exteriors that shine with chrome and new paint jobs, while the worse-off autos are held together with odd parts and scrap metal.
That means even today, the roadways in Cuba are populated with thousands of 1950s American cars—Fords, Chevrolets, Studebakers, Oldsmobile's, and just about anything else made in the 1950s. A few of the cars are restored, but most have been cobbled together to remain running since the late 1950s. As this Detroit Free Press article points out, you’ll find American classics with diesel engines, cheap paint, and MacGyver-like engineering as no parts have been shipped to Cuba for these vehicles since the early 1960s.
Even if the parts and cars were readily available, Cuba’s own strict laws completely outlawed the purchase of cars built after 1959 for all but a few select ‘first class’ citizens. Doctors, government officials and successful athletes who travelled abroad for business were the only ones allowed to import foreign cars or purchase a state-approved Russian-built car such as a Lada, and indeed the only ones who could afford to do so.
