AMP has been a non-so-bad investment over the past cycle (2003-2007 and even till now if one held). I bought up during the near death crisis in 03. If you add up the dividends, the 3 x 40 cent capital distributions, and the sale of granted Henderson shares; I'm out ahead. I'd say most investors from that period would be in the same boat as me.
The stock clearly topped back in 2007 at $10. I knew it and thought it would go lower - maybe not this low otherwise I have taken profits and bought back in - but reasoned to keep it because it is a strategy asset in a growing industry.
This stock is a great investment at current levels - focus on the positives.
