isn't the point that gold is a reliable, effective and low-risk store of value during times when the paper is not so?

I can't see why gold wouldn't be exchanged fairly for another commodity if a particular paper currency was riskier due to some circumstance.

isn't cash just a practical innovation, only useful when it can be backed by some sort of physical value?
and therefore only good when backed with trust?

IMO gold and 'currency' metals are the more practical and efficient of commodities to physically hold (than say, an oil tanker or an equivalent amount of base metal or grain)
when/if paper is ever on the nose.

i spose it's all about what to trust and hold, and when.
both sides are winners at different times aren't they?

if i may indulge in some imagery,
gold etc can be recovered from a shipwreck or fire..
    paper not so often.
