McEwen tips gold at US$800


Friday, August 13, 2004 GOLDCORP'S chief executive, Robert McEwen, may have re-started the great gold-price guessing game with a bold prediction that gold could hit US$800 an ounce in six years time.

The boss of Canada's lowest-cost goldminer said in a television interview that he based his prediction on a century-old pattern which saw gold perform well during periods when the overall market stalled, or went backwards.

"As we entered the start of the third period in 1999, you have a loss of generational knowledge in the market and a disillusionment with financial assets," McEwen said.

He added that declining gold production over the next four-to-five years would support his theory of a higher gold price.
