    I arrived in the market from university in 1981, the year after the collapse in both silver and gold. A year later and the market was still buzzing over what had happened to precious metals.

    Two stories stick in my memory. Is seems that the Mexican government dumped their entire silver holding on the market at the inflated prices, which did for the Bunker-Hunts. Talk at the time was that the Russians did the same thing to the gold market! Nobody talked about the Fed.

    That was all a long time ago, and the underlying economic conditions today are so different that I don't think their are any useful lessons to be taken from that history.
