You are a little loose with the facts.

Gold retreated approx 45% in 1980
and continued down to a 65% retreat in 1982

It then cycled around for a further 8 years to an ultimate low of -70% when Gordon Brown and Peter Costello sold GOVT [ie the peoples ] gold to savvy investors at the ultimate low of $250.

Since then the ride up has been wonderful.

You are on the right track however when you think of movements in % terms and not $ terms.
