The economics are where the real story is, but if ADO management talk about a wide variety of applications, then I'm assuming they've thought of the economics. There is a usefulness test to satisfy in applying for a patent which looks at the commercial realities but it's not conclusive and pretty much up to the companies to do their research.

I think what we're looking at is adding longevity to a product. This may not always be the gift that manufacturers want. There are anecdotes about patents which have been bought out and sat on because they would destroy the business model (eg. light bulbs which are very long lasting) but which could be urban myth.

Also we have patent families. Nice terminology.
