To my understanding, sovereigns, half sovereigns, and other British gold coins are legal tender sterling coins, and as such not assets. The profit for the government comes from the seigniorage that is, from a tax added to the total price of the coins (metal content and production costs), that a customer of the mint has to pay to the mint.
