The option of open pit vs Undergound is largely controlled by what is known as the "Strip ratio". Put simply it is the number of tonnes of waste you need to mine to access a tonne of ore. An open pit is essentially "V" shaped in cross-section so the deeper you go the more waste you need to remove. It also depends on the angle or dip and thickness of the ore body.
