regarding your corn flakes example: I buy corn flakes to consume within a certain time frame ie... before they become moth ridden and stale.
However I would buy gold if I was wealthy enough and wanted to hedge against inflation... Similar to you thinking that that series 2 XJ jag in your shed is going to be a collectors item one day!!
Some people hedge with gold others with classic or not so classic cars n Bikes etc... in your case your happy with crusty ol corn flakes perhaps? lol
