It's great that you highlight one of the major problems of having physical gold in your possession. You have to hide it!

Unfortunately, that meant that the benefactors of the person hiding the gold got no benefits from the gold at all. And nor did the person owning the gold coins.

There are plenty of examples of precious metal stashes being found; found or unfound - a stash of metal is of little benefit to the stasher and their descendents. But they do benefit the finders.
