The stated aim of the Crusades was to cast the heathens out of the holy city of Jerusalem and make it clean.

Those who took "The Cross" and became crusaders were promised forgiveness of sins and remission from time in purgatory.

The plunder (including stolen gold) collected along the way was just a bonus.

Parrot notes that the coins predate the Crusaders but doesn't seem interested in how they came into Crusader hands.
