“The crusaders were heroes.”

The closest thing to a hero among the crusaders was Richard I of England (also known as “The Lion Heart”). He was fool! When he came to the throne he rule lands from the Scottish border to the Pyrenees. So what did he do? He handed it over to his brother John (“If John can become King of England then there is hope for all the apes in Africa!”) and headed off to Jerusalem on what was little more than and end of season football trip.

It is no great surprise that the Plantagenet continental holdings were lost in a generation.

The jihadists and the crusaders are too much alike to preference one over the other. Both use (and used) their religion to justify senseless violent attacks on moderately harmless people in faraway countries. As far as I’m concerned they are both nutters.
