    I take your point about index's in general. However the DJIA is not quite as transient as you may think with only 7 out of 30 companies being in less than 10 years as opposed to 12 out of 30 being in for 30+ years.

    Inflation is the silent tax that affects us all, the best hedge against isn't gold imo but rather to increase ones own earning power.
