Aust dollar dips on US65c call

The Australian dollar continues to be weighed by Chinese growth fears as it heads into a new week, but it has held onto much of its February gains.

During Friday trade in the United States the local unit lost ground despite the release of weak housing data in the US, with investors eyeing a research note from Deutsche Bank that tipped the currency to fall dramatically over the next 18-24 months.

At 0600 AEDT on Monday, the Australian dollar was trading at 89.67 US cents, down from 89.98 cents at the close of local trade on Friday.

Late last week, Deutsche said divergent interest rate policies in the US and Australia could see the local unit fall into the mid-60s by the end of 2015, which would represent a slump of over 25 per cent from its current level.

The official forecast from Deutsche is for the local currency to trade at 75 US cents at the end of 2015, but risks are "skewed to the downside".

Guiding the low forecast is the financial services giant's expectation the Reserve Bank of Australia will keep the cash rate at a record low well into 2016.
