Gold - is a good currancy as it doesnt rust or degrade, can be broken split into a fixed weight, its relatively scarce, and women love it.... so it has an inherent value which would determine its exchange rate with notes etc as they are easier to carry. US and Britain historically did have a gold/silver standard. Personally i would love to see a jam dohnut standard :)
