My thoughts also. China deals in buying influence and that is exactly what they are doing. The list of donations to our political parties has shown exactly that from the last election.
I dont think China is about making money out of these investments but creating influence.

The price they are paying for the Super Gold Pit near Kalgoorlie is just ridiculous and not at all good business.
Especially with the POG so low now.
