Because it preserves your wealth and has no counterparty risk. That's why central banks are sitting on loads of the stuff while pretending their paper money has value paying interest. Those interest payments have now vanished so what's the point having your money in a cash account? You're much better off with gold as it will protect you in the coming inflation. Inflation is what gold and the 30-yr bond yield are now smelling, IMO.
